Flathead Lake is located between highways 93 and 35, south of Kalispell and northeast of Missoula. It is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States. It is a world class lake trout fishery with fish over 40 lbs. having been taken. It covers 122,560 acres and it's maximum depth is 370.7 feet. Other primary fish species in Flathead include lake whitefish and yellow perch. Secondary species include mountain whitefish, pumpkinseed, largemouth bass, northern pike, and northern squaw-fish. Rainbow trout, bull trout, eastern brook trout, wetlope cutthroat trout, kokanee salmon, pygmy whitefish, and black bullhead are present in limited numbers.
